Portsmouth International Ferry Port Information

About The Port

Portsmouth International is one of the largest ferry ports in the UK and has a number of routes that connect England with the continent and surrounding islands. There are routes to France, Spain, Isle of Wight, Guernsey and Jersey. There are up to 34 crossings daily with sailing durations starting from as little as 45 minutes.

The history of Portsmouth itself has always been linked to its strategic importance and sheltered natural harbour. The Romans were the first recorded people to take an interest in the harbour in 286AD and the port has changed hands many times throughout British history, with kings and queens taking advantage of its strategic position for both conquests, defence and trade. The ferry port itself was opened in 1976 and has developed massively since then.

The specific crossing available from Portsmouth International include crossings to St Malo, Caen & Cherbourg (in France), Bilbao & Santander (in Spain), Fishbourne (in Isle of Wight), Guernsey & Jersey. Portsmouth Ferry crossings are operated by Brittany Ferries, Wightlink & Condor Ferries.

Directions For Getting There

If you are travelling to the port by car, Portsmouth International Ferry Port has the best road connections of any UK Channel ferry port and is nearer to central London than Dover or the Channel Tunnel. The M275 brings the national motorway network right to the port itself. It is extremely easy to reach no matter where in the UK you are travelling from. There are short and long term parking options within the port itself.

If you are travelling by train, the closest train station is that of Portsmouth Harbour Train Station, around 3 miles away from Portsmouth International. There are shuttle buses that operate between the two though. There are trains from all over the country that operate into this train station and there are frequent train services between Portsmouth and London Waterloo which take around 85 minutes.

If you are travelling by coach, there are a number of National Express services available that go into Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth itself. After this, a local bus service or a designated coach connection is your best option for reaching the ferry port.
