The port of Plymouth is located in the south-west of England and is a very busy port. It connects England with both Spain & France including regular crossings to Santander and Roscoff. There is a selection of up to 9 sailings per week from this port but there is seasonal variation with regards to the routes so it is best to check.
Plymouth is known as ‘Britain’s Ocean City’ and has an extremely rich maritime history. The origin of the city and its port can be dated back to Saxon times, more than 1000 years ago. There have been many famous voyages from Plymouth including Sir Francis Drake in 1572, James Cook in 1768, Charles Darwin to the Galapogos Islands in 1831 and of course, the expedition of the Pilgrims who set sail for the ‘New World’ on the Mayflower in 1620. Like many other ports in the country, Plymouth also had a significant role to play in the First and Second World War.
There is one terminal at Plymouth ferry port. Both routes to Santander and Roscoff are operated by Brittany Ferries.
If you are travelling by car, the SatNav will be your best option. Head towards Plymouth city centre and from there, signs to the ferry port are prominent everywhere. There is both short and long-term parking available, as well as parking for caravans/motorhomes in the car lanes provided they don’t interfere with ferry loading.
If you are travelling by rail and live in the south of the country, there are direct trains to Plymouth available. There are also some direct routes from other parts of the country but in most cases, passing through London is the required option. Trains regularly run from Paddington in London to Plymouth with the journey time being about 3 and a half hours. Plymouth Station is close to the centre of Plymouth and the ferry port is only 5 minutes away by taxi.
If you are travelling by coach, there are National Express services from many parts of the UK that will take you directly into Plymouth city centre. Alternatively, there are some local buses to choose from if you live close-by.
