Newhaven Ferry Port is located on the coast of East Sussex, with direct crossings available over the English Channel. It is a relatively small port but is the closest to London, and provides daily crossings to the continent.
Newhaven has been an important port throughout history, playing a wide variety of roles in the changing times and eras. Wine and spirits were popular imports through Newhaven during the 1600s and as well as block ice, which was then used by the butchers, fishmongers and hotels of the area. During the First World War, Newhaven was one of the main ports for sending munitions to France, with some 17,000 crossings of this nature taking place. It also played a significant role in the Second World War.
Like many ports in England, the port then experienced a decline in the middle of the 20th century but today, it is still a bustling town that is very proud of its heritage. There is one ferry crossing: Newhaven to Dieppe in France. The crossing takes about 4 hours and is operated by DFDS Seaways.
If you are travelling by car, Newhaven Ferry Port is located only 64 miles from London, 10 miles East of Brighton or 15 miles west of Eastbourne. Once in Newhaven, the signs for the ferry port are well-marked. Car parking is available here for both short and long-term use.
If you are travelling by rail, London and Newhaven are well-connected via the UK rail network. However, outside of London, it may be a little more difficult to find direct trains to Newhaven, in which case going through one of the London stations is your best option.
If you are travelling by coach, from many parts of the UK it might be a similar situation where you need to travel to London and then jump on something more local. If you live in the south though, there are regular buses to Newhaven that are operated by South Coast Buses. These arrive and depart daily from the likes of Brighton, Folkestone, Dover among others.
