The port of Dover is located on the south coast of England and is Europe’s busiest international ferry port. It is also the nearest English port to France, being located just 21 miles away. It contains 2 state-of-the-art terminals that accommodate 3 different ferry operators.
The port has been important for channel crossings throughout its history and the origins of the port can be traced back to Roman times. The port has seen tradesmen, statesmen, kings, queens and the everyday passenger pass through its gates over time and the port continues to expand to this day.
There are three ferry operators running ships from Dover; P&O Ferries, DFDS and Irish Ferries. P&O and Irish Ferries operate ferries from Dover to Calais, while DFDS Seaways offers a service to both Calais and Dunkerque. Across all operators, a ferry departs every 30 minutes or so, 364 days of the year.
If you are travelling to Dover port by car, there are a few different ways to reach the ferry terminal. The port is located approximately 70 miles from London and from there, the M20 motorway is the quickest and most direct route. When you get close, look out for Dover Ferry Terminal (Eastern Docks) on your SatNav.
If you are travelling by train, Dover Priory is the nearest train station to the terminal being located just over 1 mile away. There are HS1 services from London that take just over an hour. To walk to the terminal from Dover Priory will take you around 25 minutes.
The closest airport to Dover is Gatwick. This is approximately 78 miles from the ferry terminal and you will have to then take a similar route in the car down the M20 motorway.
