Poole is a busy ferry port that is located in the south east of England. It offers a wide range of ferry routes including crossings to Jersey (St Helier), Guernsey, St. Malo and Cherbourg. There are up to 22 sailings per week depending on the season. The port of Poole connects England with Jersey, Guernsey and France.
The history of the port or harbour of Poole dates all the way back to 295BC when in 1964, the waterlogged remains of an Iron Age boat were discovered. The harbour of Poole also played a key role in Roman times. It was used as an invasion port for the conquest of Southern England and this history combination makes it one of the oldest working harbours in the whole of the country. In the 19th century, 90% of Poole’s population was directly dependent on the harbour for employment as the industry was booming. Like many ports in England, Poole played a major role in both World Wars and the port was used in the Normandy landings.
Today, there are two main ferry operators that use the port: Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries. Brittany Ferries offers routes to Cherbourg. Condor Ferries offers routes to Cherbourg, St. Malo, Guernsey and Jersey. There is just one main terminal.
If you are travelling by car, Poole ferry terminal is easily accessed with good road links from the M3/M27, A31 and A35. As is the case with most of the ferry terminals, following maps/SatNav to the town of Poole is the best option with the ferry terminal being well-signposted from there. There are both short and long term parking options available opposite the terminal.
If you are travelling by rail, Poole Station is well-connected to the UK rail network so it is possible that you will be able to find a direct train no matter where you are travelling from. If not, there are regular trains from London Waterloo so it might also be a good idea to travel through there. From the station, the ferry terminal is a 20-minute walk.
If you are travelling by coach, there are some regional buses that operate directly into Poole. There are also National Express services to Poole from some locations in the UK.
