About The Port

Cairnryan is a small but relatively busy ferry port in Scotland and offers routes to Northern Ireland via Larne and Belfast. There is a selection of up to 11 sailings per day depending on the time of year and the journey to either port lasts around 2 hours or just over.

The history of the port dates back to 1701 with industrial beginnings in the area. Its most notable piece of history came during World War Two, where it was developed as an emergency west coast port facility in the event that the ports of Liverpool or Clyde were knocked out of action by the enemies. The ferry industry was established here in the 1970s and has developed into what we see today.

The Cairnryan to Larne route is operated by P&O Ferries whereas the Cairnryan to Belfast route is operated by Stena Line. The Stena Line service runs from Loch Ryan Port while P&O Ferries services run from Cairnryan Port.

Directions For Getting There

If you are travelling by car, Cairnryan is situated in the South West corner of Scotland, north of Stranraer on the A77. Both port terminals for both ferry operators are well sign-posted. There is a minimal amount of parking available though.

If you are planning to arrive by train, the nearest railway station to Cairnryan ferry port is Stranraer Railway Station, which is around 4 miles away from Cairnryan Port and 7 1/2 miles from Loch Ryan Port.

There are not many options to arrive by coach/bus.
