About The Port

Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands. The port connects the Netherlands with England and is an easy access route from mainland Europe to the UK. The route operates from Ijmuiden (30 minutes from Amsterdam city centre) to Newcastle. There are a choice of 7 crossings per week.

Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) is a heavily industrialised port and because of its booming marine-based industry, is actually the newest city to be formed in North Holland. The port was used as a base for a German torpedo base in WW2 and some facilities were destroyed here but have since been rebuilt. Due to its important connection with the North Sea, the port is now huge and houses a number of commercial and fishing vessels alongside the ferries.

The Amsterdam to Newcastle route is operated by DFDS Seaways and is an overnight ferry, lasting just under 17 hours. The ferry terminal is well-connected to the surrounding area.

Directions For Getting There

If you are travelling to the ferry port by car, the terminal is conveniently linked with the northern Dutch motorway system. You can take the A9 from Amsterdam, Den Haag, Haarlem or Alkmaar and then follow the signs leading to IJmuiden. Then turn right onto Pontplein and carry on driving with the channel to your right. Make your way under the viaduct and turn right at the roundabout, then follow Halkade until you reach the terminal. There is free public parking in front of the terminal.

If you are travelling by bus, there are regular shuttle bus services from opposite Amsterdam Central Station. These often conveniently coincide with ferry departure times.

If you are travelling by train, get the train into Amsterdam Central Station and then get a bus to IJmuiden as per the steps above.
